The Viking canal through Spangereid

The Viking canal through Spangereid<br>

The Spangereid Canal through Spangereid in Lindesnes, which was reopened in the summer of 2007, enables seafarers to travel between eastern and western Norway without having to round the hazardous coastline at Lindesnes.

The canal passes through the centre of Spangereid from Høllebukta in Lehnefjorden in the west and Båly Harbour in the east. Excavation work in 2001 confirmed that a canal over the isthmus existed in olden times. A 12m wide and 2 m deep canal, dating from around 700 AD, was uncovered.

The new Spangereid Canal is 930 m long, between 12 and 20 m wide and 2m deep and has a maximum sailing height of 4.5 m.

Passage through the canal is free. At Båly there are guest berths for visiting boats. Showers and toilet facilities are available at Lindesnes Hytteservice, which is located on the quay.
